The primary assessment is a critical component of patient management in emergency situations and its purpose is focused on identifying and treating life-threatening conditions. This step is essential for determining the immediate needs of the patient and securing their safety. During the primary assessment, responders quickly evaluate the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation, often referred to as the ABCs.

This rapid assessment allows the responder to act on any immediate threats to life, such as an obstructed airway, inadequate breathing, or severe bleeding. Addressing these critical issues right away can significantly improve the patient’s outcomes and is the highest priority in emergency care.

In contrast to this primary focus, assessing a patient’s history or vital signs, while important, occurs after identifying and managing any life-threatening conditions. Providing comfort and reassurance is also a key aspect of patient care but is not the primary goal of the primary assessment. Ensuring the patient is stable and safe comes first before moving on to other supportive measures.
