The primary role of an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is to provide immediate care to patients in emergency situations. This immediate care can include performing basic life support, controlling bleeding, managing shock, and providing comfort to patients until more advanced medical personnel arrive. EMRs are trained to recognize life-threatening conditions and to initiate appropriate intervention, which is crucial in the early stages of emergency response.

While transporting patients to advanced medical facilities is an important aspect of emergency services, that responsibility typically falls to EMTs or paramedics rather than EMRs. Assessing a patient's medical history is also important, but it usually occurs after initial care is provided and is primarily the responsibility of higher-level responders.
